Travel in China – 2001

These Shanghai schoolchildren are learning English and love to hear me speak.

They were delighted to meet me and very friendly and very curious about me, the
“Da Meiguo” (Big American) .

The red scarfs denote a certain level in school.
This was in 2001 and now they use green scarfs.
Why the wear them is a mystery to my Chinese friends who are all past school age.

I taught an English class for adults one afternoon and they are very interested in learning.
There is a remarkable difference in the students’ attitude toward learning and their teachers from the attitudes in the USA.

With their positive attitudes toward education the Chinese kids of today will out compete Americans and all of the other educated societies soon enough on the global scene.
